Sunday September 28th, 2025 – [Online] The Mohawk Institute Residential School

September 30th is our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. So, Toronto Oasis will be focusing on related topics throughout this month.

This Sunday, our featured speaker will be Tim Mt. Pleasant. Tim has been working on some articles about the Indian Residential School System, set to be published sometime this month in partnership with the Canadian Encyclopedia, Woodland Cultural Centre, and Survivors Secretariat for Truth and Reconciliation Month.

Tim Mt. Pleasant, a regular Toronto Oasis participant, is a member of the Tuscarora Nation at Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation. Tim graduated with distinction from Ryerson University’s Honours Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy program in 2021. He recently participated in postgraduate research training at McGill University, where he served on the Advisory Council on Human Research Ethics and the Research Ethics Board.

September 30th is our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. So, Toronto Oasis will be focusing on related topics throughout this month.  This Sunday, we will be watching and then discussing one or more YouTube videos to help us understand a conceptual framework for dialogue and collaboration, developed by Cree scholar Willie Ermine, called the “Ethical Space of Engagement”. We will be focusing on how this framework can be applied to interactions between Indigenous peoples and Western society. The video(s) will be selected by Tania Akon, a Toronto Oasis organizer.

Our featured speakers will be Dr. Khalid Sohail and Tania Akon, co-authors of a 2023 book: Becoming a Humanist

Dr. Sohail is the founder of GREENZONE Philosophy (https://www.greenzoneliving.ca/), and a poet, author, and psychotherapist who has presented in provincial, national and international conferences.

Tania Akon is a high school teacher in Toronto where she has taught mathematics, science and computer science since 2004. Tania has also been a Toronto Oasis organizer since 2017.
