Sunday July 6th, 2025 – [Online] Canadian Encyclopedia Article Review: Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre

Our featured speaker will be Tim Mt. Pleasant. Tim will be talking about his first article, on the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre in Kahnawà:ke in Quebec, that was recently published by the Canadian Encyclopedia.

Tim Mt. Pleasant, a regular Toronto Oasis participant, is a member of the Tuscarora Nation at Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation. Tim graduated with distinction from Ryerson University’s Honours Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy program in 2021. He recently participated in postgraduate research training at McGill University, where he served on the Advisory Council on Human Research Ethics and the Research Ethics Board.

With over 10 years of experience in Ontario’s Long-Term Care sector, including 8 years in Community Mental Health and Addictions, Tim also worked with the Ministry of Children and Youth Services on the First Nations Student Nutrition Program and is currently a Policy Intern with the Mental Health and Addictions Division of Ontario’s Ministry of Health. Tim serves on the Ethics Review Board of Public Health Ontario and the Board of Grand River Community Health Centre, and he is a peer reviewer for the Canadian Journal of Bioethics.

Sunday June 29th, 2025 – [Online] The Global Food Waste Scandal

We will be watching and then discussing a TED talk by Tristam Stuart, an activist who has worked towards ending hunger. The video was selected and will be introduced by Tanya Long, a Toronto Oasis participant.

This Sunday, we will also be having live music! Our guest musician will be Wesley Blondin-Doan, whose stage name is Kid Grit. Kid Grit’s folk songs are quiet and pensive reflections of a life lived. From the depths of isolation possible in a digital age, to the heights of exaltation, living and growing up in nature. His music travels through the processes of life and how we heal, through gentle whisperings, swelling warm harmonies, and sometimes painful personal admissions – attempting to find peace and truth in the smallest of things.

Sunday June 8th, 2025 – No Oasis This Week. Field Trip to Westhill United.

There will be no programing from Toronto Oasis on this Sunday. Instead, participants are encouraged to attend Westhill United. They will be featuring a TED talk by Tristam Stuart entitled: The Global Food Waste Scandal.

Westhill United begins their meetings on Sundays at 10:30 am. Participants can attend both in person and online.

For those who wish to attend online, go to West Hill United’s website and click the “Click to Join our Gatherings – Online Sunday at 10:30 am or our seasonal events” link to join remotely.

For those wanting to attend in person, you can access Westhill United by TTC or by car. Westhill United is located at: 62 Orchard Park Drive, Toronto, ON M1E 3T7. For those wishing to take the TTC, take the 86C bus from Kennedy Station and then get off at the stop at the intersection of Kingston Rd and Manse Rd. Westhill United’s building is a two-minute walk west of this stop.
