Our program will run from 11 am to 12:30 pm but you can join in to the meeting starting at 10:45 am. Volunteers please join by 10:30 am.
Where did the concept of “lived experience” come from? Is it meaningful? Has it been coopted? In the early decades of western women’s liberation movements, progressive voices challenged a wide range of mainstream ideas. They argued that concepts routinely seen as “common sense” were largely based on privileged, white male experience. In other words, sexism, classism and racism, working together, created social institutions that kept gender, class and ‘race’ divisions firmly in place. Fast forward to 2020, and we see significant changes… or is it only the optics that have changed? What does it mean when those in power invoke their “lived experience”?
Our featured speaker on this topic will be Helen Lenskyj, Professor Emerita, University of Toronto, where she taught sociology. Helen grew up in Australia and has lived in Toronto since 1966. She completed her Ph.D. at the University of Toronto in 1983, and was a professor from 1986 until retiring in 2007. As well as writing books, she enjoys swimming and kayaking.
